Day 4 – 23 April 2009 – The Choice of Boat

I researched a lot of different dinghy designs before choosing to build a Tammie Norrie, a 13′-6″  yawl, designed by Iain Oughtred.  The best pictures I’ve found of the ‘vision’ for the boat are posted here:

There is a long road between starting and achieving that vision and I have heard tha some peple take four years to complete their boats.  13′-6″ is the maximum size that will fit in our garage and it will hold four people.  Why choose a traditional design?  I have nothing against modern designs – I looked at several interesting options.  It is not for sentimental reasons that I chose a ‘classic’ boat, but it is more to do with the enjoyment of real materials.  There is something more ‘real’ about lumber, bronze and cotton than there is about plastic or plywood.  Well, maybe there is a little sentimentality.
